Hanging out in Portland

Last week in Portland, they had a "Sand in the City" Festival. We went to check it out and had a lot of fun. It helped us remember how much we enjoy walking around downtown Portland. It really is family friendly (besides the parking), and puts on some fun activities.

Bridger & Daddy watching the puppet shows.

We of course could not resist going for the fountain. "Water" is actually one of the few 2 syllable words Bridger says consistently. Maybe it is his Arizona heritage that makes seeing water such a special event.

A few of the sand sculptures.

Wahoo! Here comes # 2!

On Father's Day, Jim was giving a talk in church and spilled the beans about another Schaffer joining our ranks in January. We have slowly let the word trickle out since then. Jim briefly also mentioned it in his post below. However, I am 13 weeks along and have something the length of a kiwi in my belly so I suppose it is time to make an official announcement.
These are the ultrasound photos I got yesterday at the doctor's office (see our traumatic story about the doctor's office visit below). Above is a profile shot of our second big-brained child. Below is a (little bit scary looking) frontal face shot with the little one waving hello.

We are very excited to have our family expand to four in January. Bridger and this little guy/gal will be about 2 years and 2 weeks apart if everything happens "on-time".

Okay, my little adventure story about having Bridger at the doctor's visit yesterday is thus... (if you don't really care, that is fine...just stop reading now.) We amazingly enough arrived EARLY (by about 15 minutes) for the ultrasound appointment (instead of rushing in 2 minutes before in a mad dash, leaving behind extra essentials like diapers and snacks - which is the usual scenario)and they were not quite ready for us, so as we waited to be called back we were feeling pretty good about ourselves. Bridger was in a great mood and being really friendly with everyone. Then about 5 minutes after our appointment was supposed to start, the power in the building went out! It stayed out for 45 minutes, there was an old lady stuck in the elevator, I had about 2 liters of water in bladder in preparation for the ultrasound, the doctor's office as a whole got extremely backed up, but still Bridger was happy as a clam and was hanging out with the other children stranded in the waiting room. Yadda yadda yadda, 2 hours after we arrive, we finally get in to see the doctor - Bridger is still pretty good natured, but we are on our last Graham Cracker (we had a whole pack at the start of this adventure). Two and a half hours after we arrive we finally get in to get these precious ultrasound photos. By this time, Bridger was done. I had to strap him down in the stroller, was out of snacks, could not move, and he screamed and cried big crocodile tears the whole time they were doing the ultrasound measurements. Sigh, and I still had lab work to do after the ultrasound. By the time we left, we knew all the front desk ladies on a very new level, got a few pieces of chocolate for our troubles, and all in all survived the 3 hour trip to the doctor's office. Needless to say, we Bridger and I both had a very good nap that afternoon.

A year and half already?

It's true... our little Bridger is officially a 1 1/2 year old going on 3, certified car-carrying, nursery newbie.

Here are his 18 month old check-up stats:
Weight: 28 lbs 4 oz (80%)
Height: 33 in (70%)
Head: 49.5 cm (90%)

Why do we love Bridger? Let us try to count the ways!

The Smiles!

He is game for adventures!

Likes to hang out in Portland.

Is entertained by Cardboard boxes.
Loves all the animals at the Zoo. (He kept saying hi & bye to each one.)

Actually loved the fireworks display & did not get close enough to be in danger.

Last, but not least...Never gets tired of Peek-A-Boo!

Busy Month

So, we've been really busy. This past month we:
Announced that we are having a baby in January.
Went on a Pioneer Trek in Eastern Washington.
Moved into a (rental) house with a back yard and a couple extra rooms.
Set off some fireworks. We made 3 out of 4 kids cry. Bridger, after having endured 4th of July fireworks in New York City last year, loved our little fireworks and clapped after every one.

Rolled down some hills.

Hung out with zombie bike riders.
